On September 22, 2010, a small group of U.S. Embassy employees and female military troops, all of whom played college soccer, brought a soccer clinic to a girls’ school in a remote area of Logar province. More than 50 girls came out to play ball, uninhibited by their headscarves and sandals. The soccer “field” was a walled off plot of land, mostly rocks and dirt, but it didn’t stop the girls from running, kicking, and laughing. The event evolved as a joint effort between the PRT, RSO, the military, the Political Section, and PAS. Participants were given soccer balls donated by the Houston Dynamo professional soccer team.
