Chakana, border with Dara-e-Suf, one day horse ride from Kohi Baba mountain range of Bamyan. Group of men digging a kanda. Kandas are a traditional way of storing water in mountaineous, rain-fed only areas of Afghanistan. People excavate rock to construct a underground reservoir which is later filled with water harvested on hill or mountains slopes. Water is then stored for months during dry periods of year. Water quality is low since harvested rain brings inside all dirt, mud, feaces existing on slopes. There are often cases of dysentery or sometimes of cholera in such areas, however no surface or ground water table exists there. This photo was taken on April 11, 2010.
