Gamma Shine

The Highlands Council of Scotland has buried on its official website some truly fascinating large PDF reports on risk assessment and emergency planning for a possible nuclear accident at nuclear powered submarine (Z-berth) mooring jetties at the NATO Loch Ewe base and at Broadford Bay, Isle of Skye, both in the north west of Scotland.

I thought they deserved a much wider audience.

Also covered is the Royal Navy/Rolls Royce "Naval Reactor Test Establishment" (NRTE, HMS Vulcan), a shore-based facility for the evaluation of nuclear submarine power plants before they enter service. This is immediately adjacent to the famous UKAEA (Atomic Energy Authority) Dounreay site.

Some may well have discovered the documents for themselves a while ago, but they will now realise that their bookmarks no longer work. The URLs have since changed - below are the latest correct ones, as of May 2005.

The documents also reveal detailed building layouts showing the radioactivity decontamination shower areas for military personnel, located at QinetiQ's BUTEC (British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre) base at Kyle of Lochalsh (for the Broadford Bay Z-berth) and the Naval Boom Defence Depot at Mellon Charles (for the Loch Ewe Z-berth).

In May 2005, Getmapping announced the uploading of a significant set of brand new aerial photos of large areas of the Scottish Highlands, previously uncharted.
