BOSTON:
A 44-year-old Briton, arrested in the US for making false statements on an immigration form at Boston's international airport, has been ordered detained pending a federal court hearing next week.
Donald Oliver Browne of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, is accused of fraud and misuse of visas, permits and other documents, and of falsely stating on a visitor's visa application that he had never been convicted of two or more crimes. According to court documents, a computer check identified Browne as armed and dangerous.
Subsequent information indicated that he had been convicted of murder, hijacking, membership in the Provisional Irish Republican Army, and in possession of firearms. Browne was arrested after arriving in Boston on November 13 on a British Airways flight from London.

Donal Browne was part of an IRA gang which murdered Douglas (James ?) McElhinney on 24 February 1985. McElhinney had served in the British Army's Ulster Defence Regiment from August 1970 to September 1978 and attained the rank of Lance Corporal. He was unarmed at the time of his murder which occurred when Donal Browne and several others shot him in the face and neck as he was getting into his car. Forty-two year old McElhinney, of Bann Drive, Waterside, Londonderry was survived by his wife and 3 children.
Donal Browne was sentenced to life for his part in the murder. In December 1995 he was prisoner number A287 in the Maze (prison) and was subsequently released as part of the so-called Good Friday Agreement under which the IRA was to completely disarm by May 2000.
