Professor Jon Shelburne Bio:

Professor Shelburne is the Acting Director of Roger Williams School of Law Criminal Defense Clinic.  He also teaches courses in Trial Advocacy, Advanced Trial Advocacy, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure as well as seminars on Military Law, Terrorism and the First Amendment, and International Law at the law school.  Professor Shelburne is the Director of Competitions for the law school.  He serves as an advisor for the Moot Court board and as a coach for moot court and mock trial teams at the law school.  He is certified to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and is certified to practice in both Rhode Island and Texas. Professor Shelburne is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and is certified as a military judge.  He is currently assigned as the Assistant Regional Defense Counsel for the East Coast.  He deployed to Iraq in 2004 and actively defends Marines in high visibility cases that often receive international attention.  Professor Shelburne served on active duty with the Marine Corps for more than ten years prior to joining the faculty at Roger Williams. In addition to his work with the law school and the Marines, Professor Shelburne continues to stay active in international law serving as an adjunct professor with the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies in places such as Bosnia, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mexico, Moldova, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Slovakia, and Slovenia.  He also teaches the resident course on Stability Operations and Legal Aspects of Rules of Engagement/Use of Force in Afghanistan in Newport.
