Di Canio: I am fascist, not racist

Lazio captain Paolo Di Canio has declared he is "a fascist not a racist", while confirming he will appeal a fine handed down to him by the Italian Football Association.
The former West Ham United star was fined £7,000 ($A16,600) for his Roman/Nazi salute after Lazio's Serie A match against Juventus, but the 37-year-old striker has hired a lawyer, arguing the punishment is undeserved.
"I am a fascist not a racist," Di Canio told Channel 4's Football Italia.
"I give the Roman salute because it is a greeting from comrade to fellow comrade that is directed towards my people."
"With the raised arm I do not intend to incite violence or even racial hatred."
Di Canio has received widespread support since the much-publicised incident; from Lazio fans, staff and political leaders in Italy.
"I’d like to thank my supporters," he added. "I would also like to thank my friends who have stood by me during this time and for the solidarity shown for a gesture that for me is just about belonging."
"Merry Christmas and long live liberty."
