Scope & Content  Note:
American and foreign posters and public notices collected by the Office of Naval Records and Library of the Dept. of the Navy. Some were used by the Navy in campaigns to recruit fighting men and involve both civilians and Navy personnel in the war effort. Sources included the US Army Recruiting Service, US Marine Corps, US Navy Publicity Bureau, US Fuel and Food Administrations, American Library Association, the British Parliamentary War Savings Committee, the American Red Cross, Liberty Loan, and National Committees of Canada, Russia, Austria, Italy, and France. Among the items are posters urging contributions to Jewish Relief; German Government proclamations and recruiting posters; American posters calling for the passage of Prohibition; Bavarian anti-Bolshevik posters; US posters encouraging conservation and productivity, warning against spies, and urging support of the Liberty Loans; and Navy recruiting posters designed by artists such as James Montgomery Flagg and Howard Chandler Christy, who had volunteered their services to the Navy.
