For example, in RN "control-G" skips to the next section of a digest; and in NN, "G%" presents material as a digest. Sections in this document may also be located by searching for the desired section number string (e.g. "-1-") from the list above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: WIDLIST -1- Subject: What is a Listserv? A listserv is a public or private electronic mailing list. People who "subscribe" to, or "unsubscribe" from, a listserv ask that their E-Mail addresses be added or deleted from the mailing list. Listserv is a way of sending one notice to many different people on many different computer systems. Listservs are one of the more popular ways to quickly disseminate information, share opinions, and get advice through the Internet. When you subscribe to a listserv you will get a copy of every message sent to the list in your electronic mailbox. You will also have the ability to send your messages to all other subscribers by sending them to one, central address for quick, electronic distribution to everyone on the list. There are thousands of lists on a very wide range of topics on the Internet. WIDLIST includes all the listservs relating to disability we know of. Please let us know if you discover any others by sending mail to widnet@delphi.com so we can add them to the next edition of WIDLIST. From: WIDLIST -2- Subject: How to Subscribe to a Listserv There is a standard way to subscribe (or unsubscribe) from any listserv: 1.) Send electronic mail to the appropriate electronic address as it is given in WIDLIST; 2.) Leave the Subject line of your message blank; 3.) Identify yourself and what you want in your message in just four words all on one line like this: subscribe [list name] your.first.name your.last.name unsubscribe [list name] your.first.name your.last.name Here's an example. In this example, Janina Sajka is sending Internet mail from WIDnet asking to be added to Project EASI's list: To: internet"easi@educom.edu" Subj: Enter your message below. Press CTRL/Z when complete, or CTRL/C to quit: subscribe easi Janina Sajka From: WIDLIST -3- Subject: The WIDnet List of Disability Lists +++ ADAPT-L American University's ADAPT-L listserve is meant to provide a forum for librarians and library staff members to discuss adaptive technology issues affecting patrons and employees with disabilities. The list is open to all interested subscribers and will be unmoderated (for now anyway). Because there are already listservers related specifically to the Americans with Disabilities Act legislation and assistive technology for post-secondary education audiences, this list will hopefully be a little different. First, it will focus specifically on adaptive technology - both low tech and high tech (low tech including ramps, door handles, etc.). Second, public, school, and special library staff members are encouraged to subscribe. Many of the online resources related to assistive technology focus on the post-secondary education audience so this is an effort to diversify a bit. The list will be a place to: ask (and answer) adaptive technology-related reference questions; share thoughts on new (or old) adaptive devices; share information about design manufacturers and/or consultants; comment on any issues relating to adaptive technology in libraries. DSSHE-L The Discussion group on Disabled Student Services in Higher Education DSSHE-L is a LISTSERV discussiuon group formed to serve as a communication vehicle for those interested in the provision of services to students with diabilities in Higher Education. The purpose of DSSHE-L is to provide a forum for the sharing of information among providers of services for students with disabilities in higher education. Issues discussed may include: service delivery models, legal issues pertaining to the American's with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, publications of interest, assistive technology, counseling and career issues for students with disabilities, removing architectural and attitudinal barriers, grants and other funding sources, athletics/physical education, testing and other academic accommodations, disability awareness programming, available resources, student development theory, job opportunities, and other issues that relate to students with disabilities and to higher education service providers. To subscribe to DSSHE-L send a message to LISTSERV@UBVM. In the text of the message put: SUB DSSHE-L Your real name +++ EASI Dear EASI discussion list members: Please forgive me if you get this mail from both easi@umich.edu and easi@um.cc.umich.edu as I want to be certain you get this important announcement. EASI: Equal Access to Software and Information, is moving its electronic discussion lists, including EASI, to a new computer host. St. Johns University is becoming an electronic center for disability and rehab services. Moving there puts us with several related groups. st. Johns also is providing other electronic services which will enhance EASI's ability to serve you. This will probably be the final mailing you will receive from this address. Your next EASI mail should come from St. Johns. Its bitnet address will be EASI@sjuvm and the internet address will be EASI@sjuvm.stjohns.edu. You will send your mail to the relevant address for distribution. Listserve commands can be sent by you to either listserv@sjuvm or listserv@sjuvm.stjohns.edu. YES!! This means that those of you familiar with listservers can send commands to sub or signoff or set to nomail or set to digest format. This should mean faster service to you and less hassle for the moderators. Shortly after you receive notice of being added to the St. Johns list, you will be getting mail from EASI outlining the new services already in place and discussing some of the probable future electronic enhancements. EASi sincerely hopes the change goes smoothly. If you have problems and need human help or if you think you got lost in the shuffle, send email to nrcgsh@ritvax.isc.rit.edu Norman Coombs Chair, EASI: EASI FLASH Vol. 2 No. 14 This EASI FLASH will have reached you from a new mailing address. Please not it! It is a listserve address and will permit you yourself to send a series of commands to the listserve to change your mail options:to sub, to signoff, to set to mail or nomail, to set to digest and others. This is part of EASI's opening a new and enhanced electronic service which is based at St. Johns University. We owe thanks to Bob Zenhausern and to St. Johns. They are rapidly becoming an electronic center on rehabilitation and disabilities. At present, EASI has its mailing lists located at St. Johns and also has a database on Disability and adaptive tech as part of the St. Johns gopher. Soon, we plan to initiate an electronic jureid journal on disability access to information technology, and the plans are for the journal to have international editorship as well as an international audience. Finally, St. Johns has the capability for EASI to have a number of other conferencing features including a real-time chatting capability. We plan to explore these enhancements too in the coming months. First let me talk a little more about the two major email lists: EASI and AXSLIB-L. Note the specific address at the top of the message to see whether you are listed with a bitnet or internet address. You need to use the same form, bitnet or internet, when sending mail to the list for rebroadcast. Otherwise, the listserve won't recognize you. Here are the forms of the address you will see: Bitnet: easi@sjuvm AXSLIB-L@SJUVM Internet EASI@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU AXSLIB-L@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU Mail sent to the appropriate address will be sent on to everyone on the list. Using the reply command to mail from that list will also be broadcast to the entire list. You can send commands to have your mail options changed. Such mail should be addressed to: bitnet LISTSERVE@SJUVM Internet LISTSERV@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU Here are examples of some listserve commands you may want to use (these should be addressed to listserv at the address and NOT to the list. What goes to the list goes to EVERYONE. The subject line of a command message should be left blank. The message should contain one line and here are examples): to join: sub EASI "firstname Lastname" sub axslib-l "Firstname Lastname" (And note put your name not firstname lastname). to drop the list: signoff easi signoff axslib-l to stop mail temporarily while away: set easi nomail set axslib-l nomail to reset to receive mail: set easi mail set axslib-l mail to receive material as a daily digest and not individual mailings: set easi digest set axslib-l digest to return to individual mailings instead of digest: set easi nodigest set axslib-l nodigest You may either contact us for further assistance or else the email posstmaster at your campus. Second, I want to talk about our gopher facilities. Unhappily, if you only have bitnet access or other access limited to email, you cannot reach the gopher. We will shortly send out some instructions to provide limited access help for those who are not on the internet and do not have the ability to access a gopher. This information should follow in a few short days. How do you know if you are on internet? If your mail address ends with something like 'edu', 'org', 'gov' or 'mil', then you are on the internet. You can also ask your computing people. Those of you who have a favorite gopher, access it and look for a menu screen listing all the gophers in New York State. Those who do not yet have such a favorite gopher can telnet to: consultant.micro.umn.edu Once you locate New York State Gophers, look for St. Johns and select that from the menu. What follows next will be copies of screens showing the EASI facilities at St. Johns. Before showing them, let me add this. When you pick an actual document off a menu, what you then see is that document on your screen, one screen at a time. You can always input a 'q' to quit instead of reading it. Before returning you from the document to the menu, you have the choice, besides inputting a return to go back to the menu, to input 'm' which will mail a copy of that document to yourself. (In my experience the mailing only works when I provide the internet not bitnet form of my email address. In my case nrcgsh@ritvax or nrcgsh@ritvax.bitnet is my bitnet address while nrcgsh@ritvax.isc.rit.edu is the internet. Your internet address will probably end with 'edu' or 'org' or'gov' or something similar to these.) If you need further directions, please contact us at EASI. Subsription to both lists is still welcome, however. net-resources: resources only, low volume. (5-10 messages per week.) net-happenings: conferences, publications, political news, resources, newsletters, etc. (4-8 messages per day) 3) additonal functionality is now available on the InterNIC listserver: archiving with index and search capabilities; and list digest capabilities. instructions are included below. It is *not* intended to be an academic discussion list, since other lists (stutt-l stutt-x) currently exist to serve that purpose. The idea for STUT-HLP grew from my observation that the current lists that are available for stuttering seem to serve the needs of academics rather than people who stutter. I don't feel that this is intentional, but it happens nonetheless. STUT-HLP will be for individuals who stutter, and the observations of these individuals will not be inhibited by theoretical discussions of stuttering. I think we all can agree that the way that stuttering is approached by the person who stutters is often different from that of the person who *treats* stutterers. SLPs and other professionals are welcome to join the list and to "listen to" and consider what is said by the participants. However, I will discourage anyone who uses the list as a forum to promote a particular approach to therapy, or who attempts to diminish the seriousness or importance of what any list participant has to say. You can join STUT-HLP by sending a "subscribe" message to listserv@bgu.edu (internet) or listserv@ecnuxa.bitnet in the following form: subscribe stut-hlp 'your full name' Let me reiterate that *in no way* is this list intended to be a replacement for, or a competitor to, either stutt-l or stutt-x. We know from our own experience that one of the main difficulties people dealing with tbi face is that their time is mostly dominated by the survivor's recovery process. Accessing support groups or networking of any kind can seem like one more thing to add to an already packed schedule. A forum such as this is available at all hours of the day or night and does not need to become one more event that must be scheduled. Here are the details, courtesy of Scott Rust: On July 26 at 9:30 a.m., the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance will hold the first Congressional hearing ever held over a computer network. The oversight hearing on "The Role of Government in Cyberspace" will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the National Press Club at 14th and F Streets, NW, Washington, DC. The hearing is open to the public. An open house will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on the same day in the same location and is also open to the public. Chairman Markey has asked that this historic occasion demonstrate the potential and diversity of the global Internet. Thirty Sparcstations will be in the hearing room, allowing members of Congress, staff, and their guests to read e-mail, use Gopher menus, read testimony in WAIS databases, browse the World Wide Web, and otherwise use the resources of the global Internet as part of the hearing. Some witnesses for the hearing will testify remotely, sending audio and video over the Internet. Audio and video of the hearing will also be multicast over the Multicast Backbone (MBONE). C-SPAN and other traditional media are expected to carry the event as well. One of the primary points that the sponors hope to demonstrate is the diversity and size of the Internet. They have therefore established an electronic mail address by you and other people on the Internet can communicate with the subcommittee before and during the hearing: congress@town.hall.org You are encouraged to send their comments on what the role of government should be in the information age to this address. Your comments to this address will be made part of the public record of the hearing. You should feel free to carry on a dialogue with others on a mailing list, cc'ing the e-mail address. Cards and letters to congress@town.hall.org will help demonstrate that there are people who use the Internet as part of their personal and professional lives. You are encouraged to send comments on the role of government in cyberspace, on what role cyberspace should play in government (e.g., whether government data be made available on the Internet), on how the Internet should be built and financed, on how you use the Internet, and on any other topic you feel is appropriate. This is your chance to show the U.S. Congress that there is a constituency that cares about this global infrastructure. However, the event suffered from the loss of the OLYMPUS satellite which was hit by a meteorite while our planet earth passed through its belt in the preceding week. Bureaucratic difficulties also prevented the use of the digital video link between Brown University and Moscow Space Research Institute. On the other hand, Apple/Moscow successfully received CU-SeeMe video on a Macintosh via the Internet. II.
