THE PAST Lenny The Past Sat Mar 31 08:51:36 2001 For the anonymous contributor who believes that thinking about the past is an exercise in futility, here's a response. If we don't analyze what was good in the past, how can we, as radio professionals, improve the quality of the present. Thinking about the past prevents us from making the same mistakes over and over again. Think about it -------------------------------------------------- Anonymous Re: The Past Sat Mar 31 14:35:09 2001 you are right, but on this board the past is not used to learn but to criticize. you want aku and others? listen to old tapes. dont put down the jocks now on the air maiking thier own history. -------------------------------------------------- mel Re: The Past Sun Apr 1 11:29:27 2001 The past pertaining to anything related to broadcast in Hawaii is an appropriate topic on this board. A lot of people like to reminisce about days gone by. Radio was fun back then and free from gigantic corporate ownership. -------------------------------------------------- Ivan Badget Radio in the past Mon Apr 2 02:55:55 2001 I totally agree that radio in the old days was much more fun. I still remember the days when KUMU FM 94.7 was easy listening. The ex-easy listening format of KUMU FM 94.7 included adult standards, soft AC, smooth jazz, and soft instrumentals. It's too bad that KUMU AM and FM are now owned by Emerald City Radio Partners, which is a big corporation. In Grand Junction, Colorado, KJYE FM 92.3 plays a blend of soft AC, adult standards, and smooth jazz. KJYE is owned by Maranatha Broadcasting Company, which is a local corporation that is far less controlling than a huge corporation like Clear Channel or Emerald City. Had KUMU radio not been sold to Emerald City, KUMU FM 94.7 probably would be playing a blend of soft AC, adult standards, and smooth jazz. -------------------------------------------------- mel KRTR used to be KJYE Tue Apr 3 21:19:42 2001 Speaking of the past, KJYE was once the call letters of KRTR FM 96.3 when it was an easy listening station in the early 1980s. It then became KSHO playing a jazz format before going All Beatles for a while and then to the soft rock and later adult contemporary format we have today. -------------------------------------------------- MomoTaro Other station changes Tue Apr 3 21:41:06 2001 Remember when KPOI FM was KDUK (The Duke)... KPOI used to be AM KSSK FM was KULA and KXPW KSSK AM used to be KGMB (The BEE) KIKI FM was KPIG and then KMAI KQMQ AM was KKUA KIKI AM used to be AM830 KHVH was AM990 KHNR used to be KORL -------------------------------------------------- mel Re: Other station changes Wed Apr 4 10:05:55 2001 KJPN used to be KDEO used to be KAHU KPOI FM was KDUK and before that KHSS and before that KPOI FM! When KPOI was on AM it was at 1380 on the dial before moving to 1040 to become an oldies station for a short while and then easy listening... then they changed to KLHT Christian radio that we have today. KHVH radio used to be at 1040 AM then moved to 990 AM then to 830 AM. KIKI AM 830 became KHVH AM @ 830. Before it was KQMQ AM, it was KKUA and before that KULA or KILA (can't exactly remember) KWAI radio used to be KIOE and KHAI before that. KQMQ FM used to be KGMQ FM and before that KGMB FM. During its time as KGMQ FM, a DJ named Captain Cook used to work there... he is Dan Cooke at KITV 4 now... Anyone remember "I listen to the new sound of QFM?" -------------------------------------------------- MomoTaro Re: Other station changes Wed Apr 4 15:16:31 2001 Mel, your memory is AWESOME! -------------------------------------------------- Anon Old Radio Callsigns Wed Apr 4 09:51:44 2001 In the late 1940s and early 1950s this was the AM line up: KGMB 590, KPOA 630, KULA 690, KGU 760, KIKI 830, KAHU 920, KANI 1120 and last up on the dial in those days was KHON 1380 before it was changed to KPOI later. Boy hat brings back a lot of memories from my childhood days. Only one FM station that was hard to receive at the time and it was good old KAIM. -------------------------------------------------- MomoTaro TV ANCHORS Mon Apr 2 06:13:03 2001 Whatever happened to some of those tv folks...Where are they now??? Bob Sevey -- Quietly enjoying retirement somewhere in Washington State. Tim Tindall -- Currently working for eNewsHawaii.com, as a "cyberAnchor". -------------------------------------------------- can't remember Here's more Tue Apr 3 16:01:56 2001 what about Jack Hawkins (or was it Hawkings)? I remember there was a big build up, lots of prepromotion for this KITV anchor and then he stank so bad they axed him. Where's he now? Or also there was some guy that did the KHNL news when it first started yeeeears ago. I think it was just a news update really, not a fullblown newscast. But at the time they also used Ron Wood? Who was that old dude? -------------------------------------------------- Kristofer Re: TV ANCHORS Tue Apr 3 10:26:41 2001 Here's a few more... Emerald Yeh -- This former anchor for KITV-4 in the mid-80's is now a mid-day anchor and a consumer reporter for KRON-4, the San Francisco NBC affiliate. Susan Hutchinson -- Also from KITV-4 is now the weekday anchor for Seattle's CBS affiliate KIRO-7. Teri Okita -- After leaving KGMB-9, she went to work as an anchor and a reporter for WUSA-9 in Washington D.C. The CBS News Washington Bureau Chief was so impressed by Teri, that he hired her to be a CBS News National Correspondent. Dave Carlin -- Also of KGMB-9, is now an weekday anchor for San Diego's WB station KSWB-TV5. Maria Quiban -- This former KHNL-News8 weathercaster is now providing the daily weather forecast for the Orange County NewsChannel in Los Angeles. Kathy Meneno -- I have no clue as to where this former KITV-4 morning anchor ended up. Does anyone know? -------------------------------------------------- Kristofer Re: TV ANCHORS Tue Apr 3 11:34:40 2001 Here are where some former island tv sportscasters are... Larry Beil -- In 1989, after spending seven years at KGMB-9, Larry was offered a job with KTVU-2 in Oakland, CA. In 1995, he went bigtime and moved to the East Coast to join ESPN. In January 2001, Larry moved back to the Bay Area and is now a weekend sports anchor for KGO-7, San Francisco's ABC affiliate. Rick Quan -- A former KITV-4 sports anchor/director in the mid-80's, Rick settled in San Francisco and is currently the weekend sports anchor for KPIX-5, the CBS affiliate. Yes, both he and Larry Beil go head-to-head on weekends in the Bay Area. The latest Neilsen ratings had KGO-7 in second place, KPIX-5 in third. Alema Harrington -- This former KHNL-News8 weekend sports anchor is now covering sports and doing the weekend sportscast for KSL-5, the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rob Fukuzaki -- A former KITV-4 weekend sports anchor and KSSK disc jockey, moved to Los Angeles in 1994 to work as KABC-7's weekend sports anchor. That's all for now! -------------------------------------------------- .
