BIG BAND, ADULT STANDARDS DISCUSSION THREADS Ivan Badget Please put the Music of Your Life on KIPA Sun May 20 01:36:00 2001 I'll never forget the big band/nostalgia format that the Big Island's KIPA AM 620 used to feature. Big band/nostalgia is much more interesting to listen to than ABC Memories Soft AC currently featured on KIPA. Jones Music of Your Life does an exceptional job of playing big band and nostalgic music. Please replace ABC Memories Soft AC with Jones Music of Your Life Big Band/Nostalgia on KIPA. That way, KIPA will be a much more interesting station to listen to. ---------------------------------------------------------------- maximumradio it can be done if-------- Sun May 20 06:39:51 2001 Once a station has signed a contract with a program provider they are obligated by that contract to run the format-change the programming to another format offered by that provider or pay a penalty to cancel. They are probably paying on a monthly basis for that service-perhaps $500 to $750 a month and the penalty would be based on that in multiples. They most certainly could change at contract termination. That does bring to mind that KQMQ-AM could change to another ABC provided format instead of airing Radio Disney unless they have a "paid affiliation agreement". In some markets this size ABC pays affiliates of Radio Disney upwards of $100,000 a year to air Mickey and his friends. This type of 24/7 programming service comes in three varieties: Station pays; ba rter(station airs format with certain commercial insertions run in exchange for free use of the format); and as a paid affiliate(station receives an annual fee to play the format). ---------------------------------------------------------------- Ivan Badget Another strategy to restore big band/nostalgia to Maui Sat May 19 17:36:50 2001 Another strategy to restore big band/nostalgia to Maui is to mix big band/nostalgia with traditional Hawaiian music on KNUI AM 900. KAOI FM 95.1/96.7 mixes soft AC with contemporary Hawaiian music. So, I think that KNUI AM 900 should mix big band/nostalgia with traditional Haeaiian music, for traditional Hawaiian music is Hawaiian nostalgia. KMVI AM 550 programmed American nostalgia from mid 1995 to late 1997. Now, Maui is without a big band/nostalgia station. KNUI AM 900, please mix big band/nostalgia with traditional Hawaiian music. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous it could happen if--- Sat May 19 18:44:09 2001 Big band radio could happen on Maui but it's not likely. In the sea of supposedly Big Band listeners-West Palm Beach-the station with that format switched to news/talk AM/FM. It takes a company with multi-stations to be able to support a format "weak link" or a licensee with deep pockets and a like for the format. I guess that one of the applicants in December in the next round of FM filings might consider the format. Maybe you could form a group of individuals interested in doing so. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Ivan Badget My dream for Maui's KUAU AM 1570 Sat May 19 00:42:17 2001 According to the FCC, Maui's KUAU AM 1570 has a construction permit to operate on 50 kW during the day and 25 kW at night. My dream is that KUAU AM 1570 will be sold to Crawford Broadcasting and program a big band/nostalgia format under the moniker "Legends 1570." Maui needs a radio station that plays big band and nostalgic music. Big band/nostalgia is a beautiful music format. I therefore think that big band/nostalgia will reflect the beauty of Maui. Please make my dream come true by selling KUAU AM 1570 to Crawford Broadcasting and having the corporation program big band/nostalgia on the station. ---------------------------------------------------------------- maximumradio kuau format Sat May 19 06:46:20 2001 I have a client in my consulting business who likes to dream about stations undergoing transformations such as portrayed here. Every once in a while he purchases one and does what he wants with it.We all speculate/fantasize about seeing a station change formats. In this situation the licensee of KUAU most likely has no urge or necessity to sell the station and there is no reason to speculate that Crawford is going to enter the Hawaii market.Crawford is flipping to commercial formats but currently shows no signs of expansion. The 50kw operation is necessary to fulfill the outreach of the ministry that is licensee of KUAU to allow them to reach the entire State as well as the population of numerous islands to whom mthey wish to minister. Some of you oldtimers might in fact recall that the the original reason for the power increase at KAIM was to reach the islands at night and minister to the outlaying areas including the alledged cannibals on Borneo. In this case a nice dream with low probability but a fun thought just the same. It might be fun to hear from other contributors to see what your fantasy format changes would be. ---------------------------------------------------------------- .
