Erika Engle Tragic news about Jay Stone Tue Oct 16 21:39:15 2001 Loathe as I am to report really bad news ... Lifelong radio man Jay Stone has been identified by colleagues as the lone occupant of a car that crashed in Hawaii Kai Monday afternoon. Cox Radio Hawaii, which operates Oldies 107.9 where Jay last worked, was contacted by the Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office seeking family notification info. A station spokesman said Jay apparently suffered a heart attack, lost control of his car - and it overturned. He was believed to be 55 years old. Jay, who lost his job as station manager, PD and morning man in last month's restructuring of the station, was literally on his way to the airport to relocate to Las Vegas to be closer to his adult son. He also had a grown daughter in Utah. Stone was to join Clifton Radio Inc. as a vice president for marketing, according to Jerry Clifton. In addition to his former role at KGMZ, Stone did the day-book for Emmis-owned KGMB TV in Honolulu and other v/o and imaging work. Jay's career featured sky-high ups and rock-bottom lows -- something we can all relate to -- but to focus on the "ups," he'd worked at every major station in every major market, according to Clifton, and loved Hawaii according to Cox Radio's Austin Vali. Austin spent some time with Jay over the weekend as he prepared for his move. Jay served as PD, morning man, etc. at some of Honolulu's top radio stations during his two stretches in the islands. He had one of those old-school deep powerful voices - and this friend and former co-worker will miss him. Funeral arrangements are pending. Anonymous Let's remember Sun Oct 21 00:35:38 2001 Jay Stone at Murphy's Sunday 10/21 from 3pm till 10pm James Bender sad Fri Oct 19 13:09:49 2001 that's all I can say...Jay was like a father to me. Mark and I were roommates when we were 18, and Jay made sure that we always had enough. Truth is, I know there are people who will say that he could be a pain in the ass to work with, and sometimes he was. It was his stubborness that rubbed some the wrong way, but I now know that his stubborness was a result of his passion for the business. Nobody loved this business and the fun that goes along with it more than Jay. If anyone knows how I can get in touch with Mark, please email me at dosneko@netzero.net Aloha, James Bender Michael Shishido Jay Stone Wed Oct 17 18:25:25 2001 Jay was a great radio guy. I hope you had the op to work with him. I was lucky to work side by side with him for a few years. I came to know him foremost as good guy. He had an incredible set of ears, that special talent to pick a hit. And a great feel for what works on the radio. We would do music together for the couple of stations we worked at. The ballads were the fun ones to pick. I remember once we were listening to a bunch of songs. This one song hit the turntable. After a couple of minutes, he turned around in his chair to face away from me and face the wall. It was the James Ingram song, "There's No Easy Way." He turned away to wipe the tears away. The song moved him that much. He also liked to joke around a lot. He had a great sense of humor. I don't think I've ever laughed as much with any other PD. Radio has lost a good one. Mark, Stephanie and the rest of Jay's family, my condolences. Jeff Kino Radio lost a good one Wed Oct 17 06:54:10 2001 Jay Stone was a great person to work with. Having had the opportunity to work with him the mid80s was a great learning experience. He put I-94 on the map and also turned Lite Rock KULA FM 92 to KXPW Power 92. He always had a joke, wisecrack, or weird observation. He had a heart! Everyone has demons, some big and some small. But just as he approached any adversity, he did so with vigor and overcame. Jay will be truly be missed. All the best to his son Mark and his daughter. God Bless you Jay! A friend Jay Stone Wed Oct 17 00:45:44 2001 Very sad news. Jay was one of the top talents this market has ever heard. From NYC to Vegas Jay has done it all. I've worked with Jay in Salt lake City and Honolulu. Jay was the man who hired me to work here in the islands. Jay was a programmer and an incredible talent. When you get "hot-lined" from Jay, It was because he loved your bit. not because you didn't read the liner card. Having fun on the radio was the bottom line with Jay. When corporate took over, Jay played the game. But he never let it stop him from being a true personality. You will be missed my friend. Jeff J Coelho Jay will be Missed Wed Oct 17 07:39:57 2001 So sad Radio will miss a talent like Jay, I remember doing Brown Bags To Stardom with him at I-94 and KIKI, he was a great guy, very creative...just a month ago I ran into Jay at Taco Bell we sat and had lunch and thought about future projects we could work on..To his family my sincere condolences ...
