HIRATV ARCHIVED MESSAGES - DXING Doctah Out of town signals Mon Dec 10 15:34:11 2001 I've always wondered whether, on a clear night, you could pick up any mainland stations in Hawaii. Any Los Angeles clear channels ever make it out there to the islands? ------------------------------------------------------ Ninja Out of town signals Mon Dec 10 18:51:59 2001 With a very good AM Radio and external antenna, many of the 50,000 watt AM stations in the Western US can be heard in varying levels of quality. Some of the better ones: KFI Los Angeles KNBR San Francisco KPNW Eugene, OR KXTA Los Angeles KEX Portland KGA Spokane, WA KFBK Sacramento ------------------------------------------------------ DXer Re: Out of town signals Mon Dec 10 19:11:53 2001 I just want to add: KNX Los Angeles Of all the station listed, I get the clearest reception with KNX. ------------------------------------------------------ LikaNui Re: Out of town signals Mon Dec 10 18:10:30 2001 About 6 years ago I heard about a guy who sailed a small sailboat from Los Angeles to Hawai`i using only a portable AM radio to navigate... slowly moving the antenna back and forth looking for the null, he used KABC's signal from Los Angeles out to a point over halfway to Hawai`i... went without a signal for a couple of days... and then used the null from a station in Honolulu to navigate on in here! Sorry that doesn't answer your question, but it's still a good (and true) story! ------------------------------------------------------ maximumradio Re: Out of town signals Tue Dec 11 04:32:09 2001 Parking out at almost any beach parking lot it is possible to hear a lot of mainland radio if you do it after midnight. I have listened to KNBR-680/SF; KCBS-740/SF KKOH-780/Reno; KGO-810/SF; KFRE-940/ Fresno(when KJPN is down);KOMO-1000/ Seattle; KSL-1160/SLC; KLOK-1170/ San Jose;WOAI-1200/ San Antonio(the first Clear Channel station ever); and at times 890 from St George,UT; 800, 1050,and 1090 from Mexico in addition to the stations mentioned in the above posts. What I have noticed on the Mainland is that there is so much noise on AM compounded by a large number of former daytime stations running power from 6-249 watts at night that unless one is on the coast good long distance "hits" are almost impossible. I am curiuous to know if anyone posting here has an AM radio that does 9khz spacing and if so what international reception is possible? ------------------------------------------------------ .
