Historical Maps Available over the Internet The special collections unit here at Georgia has been scanning parts of their collections, mainly WPA photos, and making the images available to researchers at Georgia. They have put some of these images on a www server and made them available to to Mosaic and other users on the Internet. They are now doing some of their maps and have started to make the maps available. Some brief information is given below. How useful are these images of the maps? The Hargrett Library at the University of Georgia Libraries is in the process of having some 850 of their rare maps converted to digital files. The Hargrett Library at Georgia is the rare materials collection. The maps are from the 1600 to 1870 period. The project is to be done by the end of 1994. The maps are microfilmed and the negative is scanned at 2400 dpi to produce the digital file. Only 20% of the 850 maps will be available over the net because of the size of the files. Five maps are currently available. The maps are available through the Libraries www server. The address of University of Georgia's homepage is: http://scarlett.libs.uga.edu Once you get the homepage the maps can be found under Digital Picture Archives, then Hargrett Library - Special Collections, and then under Rare Maps.
