A raster based package for PC's running DOS. For more information contact Duane Marble at OSU. email: dmarble@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu ** OZ GIS ** The following is taken directly from the FAQ: (from OZ GIS distribution materials) OzGIS is a software system for displaying geographically referenced data, such as Census data, as maps and diagrams on screens, printers and plotters. Digitised map data (e.g.Census boundaries, GIS) and attribute data (e.g. sales, environmental) are accepted as Ascii files and preprocessed (e.g. amalgamation, line thinning, polygon construction, subsetting) before display. Maps of polygons, lines and points can be displayed according to one or two attributes along with various overlays. About 80 provide extensive options for interactively designing the layout and appearance of the map, and for attribute handling, classification, interrogation and saving maps. Maps can be output on plotters, printers and various file types. OzGIS is distributed as a "shareware" system. OzGIS is very extensive, (it is the product of over ten man-years effort), but also very cheap at A$100. OzGIS is available for evaluation via anonymous ftp from: Either Internet: [128.214.87.1] garbo.uwasa.fi Or Internet: [192.88.110.20] WSMR-SIMTEL20.Army.Mil ** PAMAP *** Notes: Available for both PC and unix workstation. Siemens-Nixdorf Information Systems BU ES GIS 81730 Muenchen Germany ** SMALLWORLD ** Notes [Company review]: The Unix based Smallworld GIS is written using the object oriented language Magik, which makes the system highly customisable. Includes integrated raster and vector data, version managed database (which allows the storage of multiple versions of all aspects of data, even raster, in a single database), a "virtual database" concept which allows the integration of commercial databases such as Oracle and Ingres), a seamless mapbase and a CASE tool to aid design and development of new applications. The package is popular with utility companies and local governments as non-technical users find it easy to learn and use. email: World.Sales@smallworld.co.uk UK.Sales@smallworld.co.uk Smallworld Systems Brunswick House 61-69 Newmarket Road Cambridge, U.K. Phone: +44 223 460199 Suite 2120 6860 S. This GIS promises complete integration of vector, raster and quadtree data. Incorporates a fully topological data structure. Tydac Technologies 1655 North Fort Myer Dr., Suite 320 Arlington, VA 22209 U.S. Phone: (703) 522-0773 1600 Carling Avenue Suite 310 Ottawa, Ontario Canada K1Z 8R7 Phone: 0753-512320 XIOS House, 219 Bath Rd. Slough, Berkshire England SL1 4AS Phone: 0753-512320 ** SYSTEM 9 ** Notes: A feature based "object oriented" modular GIS based on a toolbox approach. It is available on IBM AIX, HP UX, Solaris 2 and Solaris 1 (SunOS). System 9 operates at the Unix shell level, Korn shell preferably. Commands are can be put into scripts (or C code) similar to AMLs but much faster. The database Empress is far superior to many imbedded GIS databases (INFO comes to mind). Empress also supports 4GL and BLOBS. Everything (spatial and attributes) is in Empress tables. It is primarily a vector based system with ability to display geo-referenced raster imagery as a background. On the down side, output graphics are weak in System9 and importation of standard data formats are laborious. This is primarily because System 9 requires all feature classes to be fully defined before data capture/input can occur. In many ways it is an advanced product with a robust data model but it has some definite rough edges. The product is very expensive but that may change now that Unisys owns it. It is used more in Europe than the US. Another drawback is that there is an embedded an archaic user interface that hampers some of the crucial operations of the product. This interface is not major impediment to the product's functionality or operation, just an anonyance. Contact: Arthur R.
