(DeLorme Mapping) - These CDs contain detailed maps of the entire US, and the entire world, respectively. In both products you can locate by typing the place name or by clicking on the map, and you can select the scale you want. The USA maps go down to very detailed street level maps, with every street named. The maps for my city include every street, including one-block long dirt roads. Since there's so much more of the world than the US, the Global Explorer doesn't have nearly as much detail, but there are (less detailed) street level maps of many cities. They contain only a minimal amount of tourist information, giving the locations and one or two sentence descriptions of major tourist attractions. You can print out the maps, which works fine for me, although I've seen a couple of posts on the net from people who were having trouble printing. >>> Everywhere USA Guide (Deep River Publishing) - The is a two-CD set of pictures, videos and tourist information covering the entire US. The main method of accessing the information is to type in a location, and a distance. You are then presented with a list of tourist attractions within that distance of the location. You can click on one and see a picture, a one paragraph description, and buttons giving access to a state map showing the general location of the attraction. There may also be additional pictures or videos of the site. Additionally, there are some videos of general areas or states. This sounds pretty good, but all the pictures and videos (and the descriptions) were supplied by the attractions themselves or by tourist boards. This leads to uncritical praise of every attraction, with no real guidance about what's worthwhile. The coverage of attractions is uneven, too: some major attractions are omitted, and minor ones included. The state videos are completely useless -- just general pictures of scenic areas, with no real information. Since there's no evaluation or recommendations about what's worthwhile, this is more like a compendium of travel ads than a travel guide. >>> Best of Britain, Best of France (Compton's NewMedia) - These are two in a series of travel CD-ROMs from Compton's. They're examples of "ovel-ware" -- text from a book has been shoveled into a CD, with almost no attempt to take advantage of the features a CD-ROM has to offer. The book versions are not among my favorite travel guides, and they aren't improved much by the transition to CD-ROM. Basically, the CD-ROM contains a text description of the country. There are one country and one city map, and the text is not linked to the maps at all. The only cross- references are between restaurants and hotels located inside them. You can click on the cross-reference icons to move between the hotel description and the restaurant description. Wow. It's really a shame that they didn't do more with the text they had -- you should be able to click on a description and see its location on a map; click on a tourist attraction and see a list of restaurants nearby; get bus directions from your hotel to a tourist attraction -- but you can't do anything except read the text. >>> Great Cities of the World (InterOptica). Vol. II - covers Berlin, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, Rome, San Francisco, Seoul, Singapore, and Toronto. Volume I covers other cities. This is a pretty good travel guide on a CD-ROM. For each city, there's information on sights, transport, shopping, restaurants, hotels, recreation and entertainment. There's also a narrated slide show of the major sights. Many of the categories have maps associated with them, so you can see locations of hotels, etc. There are also maps of each city's transit system. .
