China's Productivity Trends (1990-1992) One important objective of China's economic reforms during the pas decade or so was to improve her production efficiency. An evaluation of the performance of the Chinese economy in terms of efficiency increase is urgently needed. This research was first initiated by Prof. Thomas Rawski at the University of Pittsburgh and was later expanded to include researchers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the mainland. The Hong Kong team will focus on the regional dimension of industrial and non-industrial productivity plus its policy implications. In particular, Hong Kong's contribution to China's productivity will be critically assessed Dr. Luk Chiu Ming Dr. Chan, Roger (Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, HKU) Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK China's Regional Economic Development (1989-1993) This research seeks to apply appropriate economic theories and economic theories and econometric techniques to an analysis of China's regional economic development for each individual year during the period 1949-1989. To date, it is the most comprehensive and reliable set of space-time series data. The analysis will surpass all previous studies in terms of data sophistication and in-depth interpretation as we have enlisted the support from the State Statistical Bureau and the Institute of Quantitative and Technical Economics (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences). We shall critically assess the development of different regions and to examine the hotly debated issues of equalized/unequalized development path and balanced/unbalanced growth strategy. Contributions in terms of economic modelling and regional policy formulation will be made. The aim was to correct the ills of a highly centralized economic and political system. Guangdong was chosen to be the first province to experiment with reform in all areas of its economy. This research seeks to evaluate Guangdong's performance in pre- and post- 1978 periods. Economic system reforms, regional development changes, and productivity analyses constitue the main focus of research. With the assistance of the Guangdong Statistical Bureau, detailed spatio- temporal data down to xian (county) level for 40 years will be analyzed quantitatively. Research findings will be valuable for policy formulation with regard to extending Guangdong's experience to other parts of the country. Dr. Luk Chiu Ming Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK South China University of Technology Guangdong Statistical Bureau The Convergence-divergence Debate under Socialism in China (1990-1992) Efficiency and equity have been hot issues in the debate on China's strategy in economic development. The present research addresses the latter issue within the context of the first four decades of the People's Republic. Whether China under socialism successfully promotes equity distributions which bring about regional convergence of otherwise (divergence) is our focus of research. We draw upon extensive quantitative data on China's industrial enterprises to verify such hypotheses. In additional, regional policy in different time periods is scrutinized to illuminate the complex process of regional change. Dr. Luk Chiu Ming Dr. Chan, Roger (Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, HKU) Urbanization and Urban Development in China (1986-1989) The project attempts to analyze the process of urbanization and urban development in China, with Pearl River Delta chosen as the focus of regional analysis. Emphasis is put on the influence of China's socio-economic system on the whole development process. Effects are also made to study the structure and the change of the city system and their implications for regional growth. Dr. Li Si Ming Mr. Yu Fu Lai (School of Business, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, Victoria, Australia) Recent Developments in Chinese oil exports (1987-1989) This project studies the changing role played by oil in China's exports since 1973. The Chinese initially aimed at exporting oil on a large scale to earn foreign exchange to finance technology and machinery imports. That policy was pursued in the 1970s. However, domestic oil production stagnated during 1979-92 and senious energy shortages occurred in the country. Oil production resumed growth in 1983, and China expanded its oil exports. In 1986, world oil price collapsed, hitting China heavily in its oil export earnings. This study analyses the effects of the above events on the role of oil in China's exports and economic development, and takes a glimpse into the future. Dr. Chow Chuen Ho, Larry Problems of Torrist Resources Development in Guangdong Province, China (1986-1989) Various types of tourist resources can be found in Guangdong Province. This project aims at forming a long term strategic development plan which is suitable and applicable for Guandgong Province. Cases of Hainan Dao (now Hainan Province) and the Northern Hilly Region of Guangdong are compared and illustrated. Mr. Yuen Ching Wai .
