FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a kind of service for provided by a number terminal sites for data exchanges. You can transfer (download) any files from those sites. Normally, those sites only provide either shareware (try for a period, then paid) or public domain (free copy). No commercial software can be find in those sites. Anonymous FTP sites are those FTP site that are open to general public. You don't need their user account to access these sites. When the system ask, you enter the following and you are in. Username : anonymous Password : {your local account name} Most of these sites are operated under Unix environment. Standard Unix commands like cd, lcd, get, mget are used to located and transfer (download) the file. One word of warning, you must set the file transfer type before you get the file. For text file, type 'asc'. For images and programs, type 'binary'. Type 'help' at all time to get on-line help. Geo-data FTP site list here are compiled by our staff as a directory listing. To start ftp, type 'ftp {site address}' at your terminal (either Unix, or PC in the login directory). Remember to type 'bye' when you are done. Noted that ftp operation may sometime be very slow. It's very much depend on the link and site traffic. It is better to ftp the site during their non-peak hours (for example, between 10am to 4pm HKT if the site is in US). .
