Recent important departmental field activities, in addition to the Annual Field Camp, include a three day field-trip to the Pearl River Delta and Guangzhou City led by Prof. D.P. Fitzgerald and Dr. X.B. Zhao. Hosted by the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (Earth and Environment School) rural and agricultural field studies were undertaken and aspects of the urban planning and development analyzed. Visits were made to fishery, fruit and rice production farms and a "socialist" new village (Shanyuen) in Charshan Township. Students were also able to examine an inner city redevelopment scheme, Hongmen Garden, a new estate residential district in Guangzhou City, and to gain an appreciation of some of the most rapid industrialization and urbanization in the Public's Republic. Various government officialscooperated enthusiastically in our work. The fieldcamp also provided an opportunity to discuss ways of expanding our cooperation with Zhongsan University geography colleagues. .
