With our student's help, we are able to feed in the latest API to our newsgroup hkbu.geog. hk_weather regularly. Following is a brief description of API. -- The present Air Pollution Index (API) is classified the air quality to 4 categories, Very unhealthy with API 201-500 Unhealthy : 101-200 Moderate : 51-100 Good : 0-50 And there is a classification of HK Districts into 3 main types, Urban, New Development and Industrial. The API is based on the measurement of 6 air pollutants, NO2, SO2, O3, CO, total suspended particulates (TSP) and respirable suspended particulates (RSP). Normally, the air quality of the observing stations is falling into the 'Moderate' category with an API between 50-70, quite acceptable in such a overcrowded HK. If API exceeds 100, susceptible persons with existing heart or respiratory illness are advised to reduce physcial exertion and outdoor activities. If API exceeds 200, the general public are advised to reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities. -- For questions related to information links and postings, please email to btsang@hkbu.edu.hk.
