In May, 1994, the department has setup and moderate a number of local geography newsgroup, within our campus RS6000 network system. These local newsgroups provides platform for staff and student to exchange ideas and discussions. Hkbu.geog.dept is our official departmental announcement area, while hkbu.geog.forum is our departmental discussion area. All departmental announcements will be posted in hkbc.geog.dept. Staff and students are also encouraged to make use of hkbc.geog.forum for general geography discussions within our campus community. A Geography Mail Office has also been setup at the same time. This office is operated un-moderated, except for hkbc.geog.dept. A number of geography related academic Mailing Lists have been subscribed under this office, and the received articles, after scanning and indexing, will be forward posted to these local newsgroups. Currently there are eleven such local newsgroups namely hkbu.geog.maps, hkbu.geog.gis_rs, hkbu.geog.gis_rs.products, hkbu.geog.human, hkbu.geog.transport, hkbu.geog.physical, hkbu.geog.nature, hkbu.geog.us_info, hkbu.geog.china_studies, hkbu.geog.hk_news, hkbu.geog.computing, and hkbu.geog.general. These areas provides an opportunity for all campus users to obtain useful informations on specific subject area. Weather changes information and daily forecast of Hong Kong are now being feeded to our newsgroup hkbu.geog.hk_weather regularly via Weather Underground of Hong Kong (WXHK), an independant interest organization. Our Geography Mail Office manage a Mailing List Server, which offer public mailing list for varies topics. Geography Mail Office also moderate four Geo-related conferences (forums) in the commercial public BBS named ComputerWorld Online BBS. The BBS is operated and maintained by ComputerWorld weekly newsletter. These Geo related area allow the general public to discuss geographic related topics, and also get feeds from a number of Usenet mailing list.
