Gavin Bryars is becoming England's leading minimalist composer. He began in the early 60s as a bassist in a number of progressive jazz groups, and turned towards composition by the late 60s. Now 50, Bryars is professor music at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is perhaps most famous for a piece called Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, which was recently released in a new performance with Tom Waits. The original Jesus' Blood was released in 1975 and was played many times at that time on KPFA. It features the voice of a London street tramp singing a short segment of a hymn on a never ending tape loop over soft chords played by strings. Aside from this work, Bryars has been producing many other far more impressive works, many of which have been released on ECM Records. This program tonight presented some of those recordings and the latest from ECM, Vita Nova, released just a few weeks ago. The clarity of Bryars recent music I find especially breathtaking, like a beautiful mountain landscape. I highly recommend these recordings! Three Viennese Dancers - ECM 1323 (1986) Prologue (1986), String Quartet #1 (1985), First Viennese Dance and Epilogue (1986) After the Requiem - ECM 1424 (1990) After the Requiem (1990), The Old Tower of Loebenicht (1987), Alaric (1989), Allegrasco (1983) Vita Nova - ECM 1533 (1994) Incipit Vita Nova (1989), Glorious Hill (1988), Four Elements (1990), Sub Rosa (1986) On tonights program: The Old Tower of Loebenicht The Green Ray (1990) on ARGO 433 847 - John Harle/Bournemouth Sinfonietta Allegrasco The Archangel Trip (1990) on ARGO 443 214 - ICEBREAKER Ensemble Four Elements Sub Rosa Another of Bryars' works, The Black River, is featured on ECM 1495, with soprano Sarah Leonard and Organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent. Thanks again for listening and for your interest. The next program is June 27 8pm and will feature more new releases. You can supprt new and interesting music on KPFA by supporting the station with your cash. If you are not a subscriber, please become one during the mid-June marathon.
