KPFA FM94 BERKELEY CALIFORNIA MUSIC DEPARTMENT MONDAY EVENING CONCERTS of New and Unusual Music PLAYLIST Monday, June 27, 1994 8-10pm: NEW MUSIC FOR STRINGS, presented by Richard Friedman Tonight we presented music for string quartets, and solo/concertos from three very new releases. All three CDs are highly recommended, and I wish there was enough time to play everything. The three CDs are: [1] Lament, The Brodsky Quartet Silva Classics SILKD 6001 (1994) [2] Kevin Volans Quartets #2 & 3, The Balanescu Quartet ARGO 440 687 (1994) [3] Bridge of Light, Keith Jarrett ECM New Series ECM 1450 (1994) The works presented were: Harold in Islington, Michael Thomas Brodsky Quartet [1] This is a very quick and exciting piece for quartet that was inspired by visualizing the composers friend Harold riding his bicycle in London, delivering sandwiches.! String Quartet #3 ÔThe SonglinesÕ Kevin Volans Balanescu Quartet [2] Dedicated to his friend Bruce Chatwin, the novelist, this quartet follows the earlier two quartets Volans has based on African musical ideas. His first quartet, White Man Sleeps, appears in its complete five movement form on the Kronos Pieces of Africa CD on Nonesuch. This 3rd quartet, from 1988, has a dreamlike quality that borrows some of the forms, sounds, and structures of African tribal music. Volans was born in South Africa, studied in Germany in the 70s, and was at Princeton in 1992. I look forward with great anticipation every new release from Volans, -- clearly a composer to watch. Sonata for Violin and Piano Bridge of Light, for Viola and Orchestra Keith Jarrett [3] Michelle Makarski is the violinist and Jarrett himself the pianist for the Sonata, a work from 1984 in five movements. The work shows a glancing influence from Shostakovitch and Lou Harrison. Bridge of Light features Patricia McCarty, viola, and the Fairfield Orchestra conducted by Thomas Crawford. A pastoral work from 1990. Jarrett calls it a multi-cultural hymn that demonstrates his love of trumpet and strings. This CD also includes an Elegy for Violin and Strings, and an Adagio for Oboe and Strings. Five Pieces for String Quartet Pawel Szymanski Brodsky Quartet [1] An angular and quirky set of little pieces by this young Polish composer. The Brodsky Quartet CD also includes a wonderful piece by the Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe which gives the CD its name, Lament, and is scored for a sextet with added Bass and second Cello. This is another gem on this CD. Perhaps I will be able to include it in next months broadcast. Thanks for your interest in this series of Monday Evening Concerts.
