It is a day to also commemorate the history and culture of African peoples in the Americas and other regions of the African disaspora. African Liberation Day on KPFA will feature an exciting blend of interviews, music, speeches, poetry, discussions with scholars, and dialogues with listeners during call-in segments. During 14 hours of programming, we will highlight several areas of concern: 1. The relationship between African-Americans and Native Americans. During the 1992 Quincentenary this subject was touched upon, but not given the kind of attention that it deserves. Our intention is to examine these relationships through the work of several scholars, beginning with the issue of transatlantic contacts before Columbus; the participation of Christianized Moors in the conquest; political and family alliances in resistance to the conquest; Africans and Indians in the plantation cultures of the Americas; and continued relations into the 20th Century. 2. Current educational issues for African-Americans. We will discuss the challenges of education in a multicultural society and the particular educational needs of African-Americans. There will be an assessment of pedagogical approaches employed by different cultures, and how these serve those communities not considered mainstream. The programming will look at various models for educating children. Some of the areas we will examine include: The role of Afrocentrism in education; home schooling; weekend cult ural schools; other ethnic communities' educational models, African as well as other intellectual traditions. 3. Agenda and strategy for 21st Century African-Americans. We will ask scholars to present their positions regarding the best directions for the African-American community to take in the 21st Century. They will address the areas of politics, community organizing, economic development, telecommunications in the information age, media images in historical context, housing, and gender roles among other issues. Throughout the day, we present pre-recorded interviews and speeches.
