KPFA is a radio station with a mission that includes providing "outlets for the creative skills and energies of the community..." and contributing " to a lasting understanding between...the individuals of all nations, races, creeds and colors..." (Pacifica By-Laws) We consider ourselves a bastion of First Amendment rights. What are our responsibilities when these basic principles conflict with each other? For example, should we play the instrumental music of someone who uses images of torture on his CD cove rs, or is known to beat women? What about the author who writes beautifully about his or her childhood but is known to be racist or homophobic? Should we play the above material, but provide commentary on the artist? How often? These are real issues facing KPFA every day. Opinions within the station run from one extreme to another, and the Program Director wants more input and discussion before making decisions. Perhaps there should be no station policy at allDeverything sho uld be left up to individual prog rammers. What do you think? We'll have a lively panel discussion, examples of some of the controversial material, and we invite your calls at (510) 848-4425. Hosted by Program Director Ginny Z. This loss of maternal affection can be traumatic, and is frequently internalized by young boys as rejection. The widespre ad practice of maternal withdrawal may contribute to many undesirable characteristics and emotional problems frequently exhibited by men in our culture, chief among them being emotional aloofness.
