Lyons was closely associated with Cecil Taylor from 1961 until Taylor's passing in 1986. Jimmy was one of the most distinctive alto saxophonists in contemporary music, in some respects a direct disciple of Charlie Parker (yet with one of the most personal post-Parker approaches). He in essence played Johnny Hodges to Cecil Taylor's Duke Ellington, giving a reed resonance to Taylor's pianistic percussiveness. Yet, for close to a quar ter of a century, Jimmy was one of the least recognized figures in music in terms of public acclaim. This program won't rectify that, but will celebrate his art. The self-declared head of government, Batista came to power following a coup d'etat in March of '52. He quickly abolished the constitution, dissolved the congress, outlawed the Communist Party, surrounded himself with military brass, and asked the U.S. for aid. Fighting over a thousand armed and entrenched soldiers, the student attack failed. Only 30 survived, including Castro. They were imprisoned on the Isle of Pinos. As public unrest continued, Batista released Castro and the others in an attempt to appease the public in 1955. Castro and followers fled to Mexico, where they raised funding and reorganized. On January 1, 1959, the Batista regime was overthrown. What unfolded has been the most profound social experiment in the We stern hemisphere. However, it has not been without travail. A continuing embargo against the island nation by the U.S. has left the Cuban economy devastated. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist world has left Cuba without its primary trading partners.
