Fresno only. 7:00 Black August Commemoration On August 7th, 1970, 17 year old Jonathan Jackson spearheaded an aborted attempt to free the Solidad Brothers, including Jonathan's brother, Black Panther leader George Jackson, and to draw world attention to the plight of Black prisoners. On August 21, 1971, George Jackson was murdered at San Quentin prison in what authorities describe as an escape attempt and what comrades believe was an assassination conspiracy. Since then, the month of August has been designated Black August in honor of these Black freedom fighters. This program includes interviews with three of the San Quentin Six among others, a special poetic tribute by Luis Talamantez, archival tapes of conversations with the Soladad Brothers, Ruchell Cinque Magee, Hugo Pinell, et al. There will also be performances by Amandla Poets, jazz and rap artists.
