I.E. >are the GM samples better or more realistic than say a Roland SCD-15? That is really subjective - however IMHO, I have swaped out my SCD15 (and SC88) for the Yamaha DB50XG (and MU80)! The sound is better from a qualitative standpoint in that the DACs (digital audio converters) have a higher resolution (18 bit for the Yamaha gear) and more DSP (i.e. effects and EQ). >I just read a review that was concerned that we have yet another >change to cloud the issue of GM standards. Actually, this is one time that a company actually took into account the present industry standards - while introducing a new one! The DB50XG not only has the new Yamaha standard, but it is 100% compatible with all of your GM games or music. In addition, although Yamaha wont admit it - it will also play your GS files with no problem! XG will become a factor when more game developers support the format, and I understand there are a few major developers who will announce that support at COMDEX next month! BTW, GS and XG is much more than bank switching. Both formats are vastly superior to "ordinary" GM, in that they add more voices, more DSP and deeper voice editing. With that said - if GS was a quantium leap over GM - than XG can be considered a quantium leap over GS! More of everything - while staying compatible across industry standards - and across price points. i.e. songs created on my MU80 - work just great on the DB50XG! Up to now I had always firmly believed the SCD-15 is the non plus ultra in daughter boards... (I just happen to have one myself... ;-) ) But a point that no one has raised so far is that the SCD-15 is MT-32 compatible! Especially when playing games this is a large asset; I haven't heard of the Yamaha having that particular feature. Or am I mistaken? cheers Mike. This isn't true at all. When I finally got my DB50XG up and running, I got it work with the SoundCanvas driver on only 1 game. (Out of about 5) And on that game, the SC driver sounded the same as the GM. I don't know if I mentioned this before or not, but the Awe32 plays some of the XG files better than the daughterboard does. I agree with the review to a point - right up to the one about the GS sequences - so therefore my question - are you sure that the "GS ON" command is at the top of the file. The reason that I ask is that almost 80% of the stuff out there for both GM and GS don't have the appropriate reset command at the top - and therefore the DB50XG (or MU80) won't go into it's GS (or GM) mode. On the MU80 its easy - just watch the screen and it will tell you if it has received the command - on the DB50XG - well - that's a little more difficult - but if send the GS ON command and then play the file - it should sound 1000% better! Please let me know - ST BTW: If the MU80 and/or DB50XG doesn't receive the appropriate reset command - all of the editable paramaters are left in the previous state - which may not be appropriate for the new file you are playing. >Rick.
