Klaus compares success to a fast-spinning wheel, "Only the strongest can hold on for the whole ride." Hanging tight through the toughest turns, though, the Scorpions have clearly conquered thye challenge. Scorpions never set out to be anything but a rock 'n' roll band. But by virtue of circumstance, this celebrated hard rocking German outfit has inadvertently and somewhat unwittingly emerged as the voice and eyes of a popluation unhindered by the band's incidental European geography. Reporting, through its music, on the volatile and changing complexion of world politics and its human aftermath, Scorpions have become a testament to the power of living life on the front lines. Having witnesed such landmark historical events as the coming down of the Berlin Wall and its woeful repercussions , the birth of 'Glastnost' and 'Perestroika' and the rebuilding of the Soviet Union, Scorpions have taken their place as both doctumentarians and partsicipants of a turbulent era. The first major hard rock band to perform in the Soviet Union in 1988 and again the following year as a part of the Mammoth Moscow Music Festival, Scorpions also participated in 1982's US Festival in the U.S., the Rock in Rio I extravaganza in 1985 and were one of the Western bands to venture into the unchartered seas of the Eastern Bloc (they performed behind the Iron Curtain in Budapest in 1986). In 1990, Scorpions were right at the gate when the wall came down, their hometown of Hannover sitting a mere two hundred miles from Checkpoint Charlie. Soon after, they performed to over 350,000 flag waving global fans at Potsdamer Platz - the site of No Man's Land between the former East and West Berlin - as the sole German band represented in Roger Waters' spectacular staging of Pink Floyd's "The Wall." On Decemebr 14, 1991 Scorpions became the only Western band ever to meet with a Russion leader at the Kermlin, the unprecedented invitation from Mikhail Gorbachev prompted by "Wind Of Change" (which was recorded in Russian, Spanish, and English), the band's musical homage to the changing tides in that country. Almost one year later, with their country in the throes of a neo-Nazi resurgence, Scorpions united with Germany's top actors and musicians under the moniker "Artists For Freedom, Equality and Humanity" to stage the largest peaceful rally in Germany's history. More than 180,000 people flocked to Frankfurt's Festhalle to witness the event dubbed "Today It's Them, Tomorrow It's You" while another 50 million viewed the spectacle on television. On that day, Klaus, who performed an accoustic version of "Wind Of Change" with Matthias, explained their commitment: "Our involvement in this event was crucial in communicating our hope for peace. This mobilization was intended to show the world that this is no longer Nazi Germany; that we are a democratic country. We regret our history and will not stand idly by and allow it to happen again." The lyrics he composed for "Unholy Alliance" further confirm those feelings. Scorpions have undeniably spearheaded a movement towards world unity through the universal language of music. They've assumed a new responsibility as purveyors of social/political enlightenment, an inevitability reflected in their music. While the world and its inhabitants exist in a vortex of uncertainty, something can always be counted on: Scorpions still "Rock You Like A Hurricane;" their scorching brand of rock 'n' roll - distinctive and defiantly aggressive - is a constant in these confusing times. Once upon a time, it was unthinkable that a bunch of relatively isolated kids could ever break out of a small-town German rock scene into the international limelight. But Scorpions have constantly broken the rules and have smashed through other invisible boundaries, curtains and walls, to be heard. Taken from a flier sent to me by the Scorpions News Service Transcribed by Gilbert G. Morton ggm2977@tntech.edu 1.2 New Studio and Live Album News The Scorps new album is called "Pure Instinct". It is supposed to come out at the beginning of May on the EastWest label. The single 'You and I' is supposed to come out on March 29. 1996. 2.1 Band Lineup 1968-1970 Vocals: Rudolf Schenker Wolfgang Dziony Lead Guitar: Karl-Heinz Vollmer Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Achin Kirchoff Drums: Wolfgang Dziony 1970-1974 Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Michael Schenker Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Lothar Heimberg Drums: Wolfgang Dziony 1974-1975 Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Ulrich Roth Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Francis Buchholz Drums: Jurgen Rosenthal 1975-1977 Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Ulrich Roth Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Francis Buchholz Drums: Rudy Lenners 1977-1979 Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Ulrich Roth Ryhthm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Francis Buchholz Drums: Herman Rarebell 1979-1992 Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Matthias Jabs Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Francis Buchholz Drums: Herman Rarebell 1992-present Vocals: Klaus Meine Lead Guitar: Matthias Jabs Rhythm Guitar: Rudolf Schenker Bass: Ralph Rieckermann Drums: Herman Rarebell 2.2.1 Klaus Meine Klaus Meine formed a band called Copernicus before he was in the Scorpions. It included Michael Schenker on guitar at the age of 13. When it broke up, they joined with Rudolf to re-form the Scorpions. He is still the lead vocalist for the Scorpions. 2.2.2 Rudolf Schenker He is still the rhythm guitarist for the Scorpions. He recorded a song with the former singer of UB40, Ali Campbell, called "Drive It Home" on the album "Big Love". 2.2.3 Michael Schenker Michael Schenker left the band in 1973 to join the band UFO. He later temporarily rejoined the band after Ulrich Roth left and Matthias Jabs was brought on. He was kicked out because he was an alcoholic. He then formed a band called the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He put out a couple of albums in this group until he and Robin McAuley formed the McAuley Schenker Group (also known as MSG). They had a couple of hits before breaking up. He is now working on another solo project. I quote Klaus from the 1993 interview on this subject of his solo project. "Michael is doing very well with his own stuff. Actually, I heard a tape. He's doing an accoustic album, uhh, and I hope this will go out to the fans pretty soon because it's, it's amazing. He's an amazing guitar player, and, uhh, you must hear this. I hope this will be out really soon. It's just an instrumental kind of thing, and he's playing wonderful." Michael will occasionly play with the Scorps on stage live. He has currently reunited with UFO. They have a new album called "Walk On Water". They are currently touring the USA. Watch for him! 2.2.4 Lothar Heimberg After the first album Lothar got married and got a regular job at the local power plant. I don't know any more. Any more information would help. 2.2.5 Wolfgang Dziony After the first album Wolfgang got married and got a regular job at the local power plant. I don't know any more. Any more information would help. 2.2.6 Ulrich Roth Ulrich (Uli) Roth split from the band after the album Taken By Force because he wanted to go in a different direction. The band still released a live album, Tokyo Tapes, from the previous tour. He has released three albums with Electric Sun (as Uli Jon Roth). They were: Earthquake (1979), Fire Wind (1980), and Beyond the Astral Skies (1984). The first two albums are vintage Roth, much like early Scorpions with Roth vocals. The third is more symphonic. He just released a new album called 'Sky of Avalon - prologue to the Symphonic Legends' on January 24, 1996. Apparantly it's very classical, even bordering on opera. 2.2.7 Jurgen Rosenthal Jurgen Rosenthal was replaced by Rudy Lenners because he got drafted by the German army. He later played in a progressive German band called ELOY which put out a couple of records. I don't know any more. 2.2.8 Francis Buchholz He left the band after Crazy World for personal reasons or something like that. I have heard that he used to manage the band in Germany. Then when he wanted to do just that, they wouldn't let him or something like that. That is maybe why he left. I don't know what he is currently doing. I don't know any more. Any more information would help. 2.2.9 Rudy Lenners Rudy Lenners had to quit playing with the band, and drumming because he developed a heart murmur. He was replaced by Herman Rarebell. I don't know any more. Any more information would help. 2.2.10 Herman Rarebell Herman is still the drummer for the Scorpions. He released a solo album in 1985 on Capitol Records called "Herman Ze German and Friends". Herman produced this album which included guest appearances by: Don Dokken, Steve Mariott, Jack Russell (Great White), Juan Croucier and Bobby Blotzer (Ratt), and others. It also included a cover version of "Wipe Out". Also he has done some drumming on some of Lita Ford's albums. Herman's solo album (Herman Ze German-1985) was first released a couple of years in earlier, in 1981 as 'Nip in the Bud' on import from Germany with just the trio of Herman, D.H. Cooper on guitar and George Phillips (Pedro Schemm on the 1985 version) on bass and vocals. The 1985 version was the same backing tracks re-mixed and with the new vocals added on by the guest musicians. Wipe-Out did not appear the earlier version but there was an instrumental called Triangle which the Scorpions did play on their Blackout tour which was the intro to Herman's drum solo. 2.2.11 Matthias Jabs Matthias had some prior band experience playing in a band called Lady. He is still the lead guitarist for the Scorpions. 2.2.12 Ralph Rieckermann He is still the bassist for the Scorpions. He did a lot of extensive soundtrack orchestrations before joining the band. I don't know any more. Any more information would help. 2.2.13 Karl-Heinz Vollmer He played lead guitar for the Scorpions before Lonesome Crow annd before Michael Schenker joined the band. I know nothing more about him. 2.2.14 Achin Kirchoff He played bass for the Scorpions before Lothar Heimberg joined the band. Nothing else is known about him. 3.1.01 Lonesome Crow [1972] Lonesome Crow was the Scorps first recorded album. It was originally called Action but later changed to Lonesome Crow. The next year they did a soundtrack for the German movie called Das Kalte Paradies (The Cold Paradise) which mainly dealt with drug abuse. They recorded and mixed the album in 6 or 7 days. Some of the songs for the album may be the same as in the soundtrack, but I don't know. 3.1.02 Fly To The Rainbow [1974] This album has more ballads that hard or heavy songs. It is still a good album. It has some classic ballads such as "Far Away", "They Need A Million", and "Fly People Fly". Michael Schenker co-wrote a song even though he was no longer part of the band. By the way, Rudolf sings lead on "They Need A Million". 3.1.03 In Trance [1975] This album was a very hard rock album. It has the popular songs "In Trance", "Top Of The Bill", "Robot Man", and "Life's Like A River". There has been a rumor that there was another cover released that showed part of the woman's breast. I have never seen it and am skeptical. This rumor of another cover that show's the woman's breasts has been validated. The cover is in the process of being scanned for the home page. 3.1.04 Virgin Killer [1976] This record was banned in the USA. The original cover had a young, naked girl showing with a strategic crack of glass over her genitalia. The album was one of the Scorps hardest to the date of it's release. Some of the songs include "Pictured Life", "Backstage Queen", "Hell Cat", "Virgin Killer", and "Yellow Raven". The song "Catch Your Train" used to be covered by the group Van Halen in it's early days. 3.1.05 Taken By Force [1977] This album was a very hard rock album. It has a good mix of both heavy songs and soft songs. Some of the heavy songs include "He's A Woman - She's A Man" and "The Riot Of Your Time". Some of the ballads are "Born To Touch Your Feelings" and "We'll Burn The Sky". 3.1.06 Tokyo Tapes [1978] This was the Scorps first live album. It is a two disc album of their concerts in Tokyo on the dates of April 24 and April 27 1978 at the Sun-Plaza Hall. This album catches how awesome the Scorps are on stage. They play their best stuff while throwing in some other cover songs. They played "Hound Dog", the Beatles' "Long Tall Sally", and "Suspender Love". This album also has a Japanese folk ballad, "Kojo Notsuki", on it. 3.1.07 Lovedrive [1979] This album had many Scorps classics on it. For example, "Coast To Coast", "Lovedrive", "Holiday", and "Loving You Sunday Morning". Michael did tour with them in the beginning, but kept missing gigs, which Matthias would fill in for him. Finally the decision was made to keep Matthias on full-time when Michael realized he was letting them down. This album was banned in the USA for the cover. It did show a bare breasted woman on the cover. PLAYBOY magazine voted it best album cover of the year. When it was sold in the USA, it had a plastic red wrapper covering the nudie shot. Q: How come the Scorpions only play the first half of the song 'Holiday' live? A: I don't know for sure but here is my opinion. Since the first half of the song is accoustic and the second half is not, it would be difficult to play both parts of the song live. Any help here would be appreciated. 3.1.08 Animal Magnetism [1980] This album doesn't have too many well known songs on it. It has the classics of "The Zoo" and "Lady Starlight". There is a rumor that there is a variation of the cover which shows the dog's tongue hanging out, but I have never seen and am skeptical. The version with the dog's tongue hanging out has also been validated. It is seen on the lyrics flier that comes with the LP. 3.1.09 Hot & Heavy [1982] This album is another collection of some of the heavy songs from the Scorps 70's albums. It includes three songs written entirely by Ulrich Roth, "Dark Lady", "Polar Nights", and "I've Got To Be Free". 3.1.10 Blackout [1982] Klaus Meine lost his voice just before the Scorps started working on this album. He underwent long and complex surgery. Some thought he would never sing again. In order for the band to rehearse for the recording of the Blackout album, Don Dokken was brought in to help with the vocals until Klaus was ready sing again. This brought on rumours at the time that Dokken had replaced Klaus. Note Don's credit at the rear of the album. But Klaus fought his way back with one of the Scorps hardest rocking albums ever. It had such classic cuts as "Blackout", "No One Like You", and "Dynamite". The ballad "When The Smoke Is Going Down" was also a classic track. Q: Who did the cover for the album Blackout? A: The cover was drawn by the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. In the video for "No One Like You", Rudolf poses in the same stance as the cover shot. 3.1.11 Love At First Sting [1984] This album was one of the Scorps best ever. It has such classics as "Bad Boys Running Wild", "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "Big City Nights", "Coming Home", and "Still Loving You". The cover of this album was banned in the USA for a while. There is a version out there that has a 'clean' cover. The video for 'I'm Leaving You' was shot in Seabright, New Jersey in 1984. 3.1.12 Best Of Scorpions, Volume 1 [1984] 3.1.13 Best Of Scorpions, Volume 2 [1984] These two albums were released very close together if not together. They contain a mixture of the 'better' Scorps songs from their 70's albums. They are on the RCA label as some of the Scorp's 70's albums are. These albums have a good mixture of hard rock songs and ballads. 3.1.14 World Wide Live [1985] This was the Scorps second live album. The first being Tokyo Tapes. World Wide Live was recorded during the 1984-85 Love At First Sting tour. I have heard that there is a two CD version of this which would make since because the vinyl and cassatte versions have extra songs not included on the one CD version. I have also heard that there was a World Wide Live 2, but that is unsubstatiated. 3.1.15 Gold Ballads [1985] This album was released to let the Scorps fans not forget about their band. It was released to gain support for the band. It just is a collection of five of the Scorps best ballads to date. 3.1.16 Savage Amusement [1988] This album was the Scorps first studio album in 4 years. This album also got the Scorps big in the Soviet Union. They sold out ten consecutive shows in Leningrad on the Savage Amusement tour. This album's biggest song was "Rhythm Of Love". 3.1.17 Best Of Rockers 'N' Ballads [1989] This compilation album had most of the Scorps best work at the time of release. It included such classics as "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "No One Like You", "Big City Nights", "Holiday", and "The Zoo". It also included a cover track called "I Can't Explain" by The Who. Another track, "Hey You", is a previously unreleased track as far as I can tell. It was written by Rudolf, Herman, and Klaus in 1978. Rudolf sings lead vocals on this song. I figure that it must be an extra track recorded for Animal Magnetism or Lovedrive that was never used. 3.1.18 Crazy World [1990] This album had the Scorps biggest hit to date on it. "Wind Of Change" peaked at #3 on the charts. "Wind Of Change" was so popular that even a Russian and a Spanish verison were recorded. Crazy World sold more records that Blackout which included the #1 hit "No One Like You". Q: Which song was included on a soundtrack and what was the movie? A: The song was "Hit Between The Eyes". It was in the science fiction movie "Freejack" starring Mick Jagger, and Emilio Estevez. In some versions of the video, there is a video of this song at the beginning of the movie. I think that it is exactly the same as the video from the Crazy World Live Tour video. 3.1.19 The Best Of The Ballads, Hot & Slow [1991] This album is a collection of ballads from the '70s Scorpion's albums. Some of the songs included are "In Trance", "In Search Of The Peace Of Mind", and "Born To Touch Your Feelings". 3.1.20 Face The Heat [1993] This album was a big step for the Scorpions. They replaced long time bassist Francis Buchholz with Ralph Rieckermann. Then they made one of their hardest rock albums to date not excluding BO or their early albums of VK, and IT. Q: What is the story behind the song "Unholy Alliance"? A: This song questions the rise of the Nazi underground in the band's homeland of Germany. This is what lead vocalist had to say on the subject. "We're dealing with this whole Nazi movement, to keep it under control. It puts Germany in a very bad spot in the eyes of the world. We try to do our part as popular musicians to make a stand against the neo-Nazis, to give the message that this is a democratic country. The Nazis are a minority. The Majority want to live in peace." Q: What is the ghost track on Face The Heat? A: The song is called "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame". It is a Elvis Presley song. If you wait about 1.5 minutes after the last song on the disc, then you will find the ghost track. This song is only on the commercial version of Face The Heat; it is not on the German import. Q: What if any are the tracks on the German version of FTH that are not on the commercial American version? A: "Daddy's Girl" and "Destin" are the German import extra tracks on Face The Heat. The chorus of "Destin" is sung in French. "Destin" is the same song as "Kami O Shin Juru" on the White Dove single except that the Spanish phrase is replaced with a French phrase. "Daddy's Girl" is a very cool ballad about a father who treats his daughter in a bad way. Q: What song from Face The Heat was featured in a hit movie? A: "Under The Same Sun" was in the movie On Deadly Ground starring Steven Segal and Michael Caine. It is played during the closing scene and credits of the movie. I don't think that it was released as part of the movie soundtrack though. Q: Where did the title Face The Heat come from? A: If you listen in the first song on the disc, "Alien Nation", you will hear this phrase. Don't run , there's no place to hide today or tomorrow it will get you don't move, the knife is right at your throat and whatever you do, there's no way out when the shroud comes down on this place to bury us all alive we'll know the time has come, to FACE THE HEAT 3.1.21 Live Bites [1995] This album has live recordings from 1988-1995 on it. It has on it a song called "Living For Tomorrow" which is not on any of their commercial releases. Live Bites also has three previously unreleased tracks. The Japanese import has a live song called "Ave Maria No Morro". The studio version of "Ave Maria No Morro" is on the White Dove import. The Japanese import also has "Hit Between The Eyes" live on it which is not on the American version. Q: What are the three previously unreleased tracks on this album? A: "White Dove", "Heroes Don't Cry", and "Edge Of Time". Q: What is the story behind the instrumental song "Concerto In V"? A: Rudolf used it during the Crazy World tour as the intro to 'Coast to Coast'. This is verified from a bootleg on the CW tour. On Bad Boys at Great Western the song listed as 'Coast To Coast' has Concerto In V before the song, but it is listed as one track. Q: What is the story behind the song "White Dove"? A: It is a song that the Scorpions recorded to help the starving people in Rwanda. They donate all of the money generated by this song to Unicef. There is a video for this song but I have never seen it in the USA. Supposedly it was shown on European MTV. Q: What is the story behind the song "Edge Of Time"? A: This song is a rerecording with Ralph Rieckermann on base of an overlooked and never before released track. 3.2.01 Action [1972] This album is exactly the same as Lonesome Crow. It has the same tracks. It does have a more recent picture of the band on the band on the cover. It shows the band playing live on stage. 3.2.02 Rock Galaxy [1980] This 2 disc album has exactly the same tracks as the albums Fly To The Rainbow and In Trance. I only know of it's existence on vinyl. That doesn't mean that it is not available on CD. 3.2.03 Best 2 (Japanese) [1980] This album is different from the American release entitled Best Of Scorpions, Volume 2. It contains some tracks from Tokyo Tapes. 3.2.04 Box Set (3CD) (German) [1989] This import set includes the albums World Wide Live, Savage Amusement, and Best of Rockers N Ballads. BORNB has two additional tracks of "Is There Anybody There?" and "China White". 3.2.05 Hurricane Rock (1974-1988) (British) [1989] This album is basically a best of compilation of all of the Scorps stuff up to Savage Amusement. 3.2.06 Wind Of Change (Japanese) [1991] This album from Japan has some tracks from Crazy World, then some live tracks recorded in Moscow too. The studio tracks are Wind Of Change, Send Me An Angel, Restless Nights, and I Can't Explain. The live tracks are The Zoo, Big City Nights, and Holiday. This album also includes the Russian version of Wind Of Change. 3.2.07 Crazy World (Japanese) [1991] This album is identical to the American version with one difference. The CD insert was in Japanese. The CD insert also had a Scorpions dictionary written in Japanese. It has been translated and is here. 3.2.08 Still Loving You (European) [1992] I am not sure of the track listing for this album, but I am pretty sure that it includes the song Living For Tomorrow (which is also included on Live Bites). 3.2.09 Selection 2CD (French) [1995] This 2CD collection was compiled by BMG France in 1995.
