The Eight Squared I Ching Page [Image] [Image] This page is devoted to all things concerning the I Ching and backpacking. I have presented images which correspond to the environmental manifestations of the Eight Trigrams. I have also included links to sources related to various aspects of Chinese mysticism and the great outdoors. Check out my original paper, Advanced I Ching and let me know how you like it. If that link doesnt connect try this one. Ive also written a short essay on some of Terence McKennas work on the I Ching as it relates to the Five Stages or States of Change(this link is the latest version),this paper contains the proofs to my theory that the I Ching is an ancient religious representation of the C-60 form of carbon commonly referred to as the Buckyball. This linkcan also be used. The Eight Trigrams: Androgyny and Marriage The Eight Trigrams are sub-divided into two groups of four. The first group is comprised of what I call The Relations of Androgyny, the second group I call the Relations of Marriage. These groupings are based on the Thought families as described by Ffarrington-Hook in her book The I Ching and You(1973). The Thought hexagrams according to Ffarrington-Hook, are the complements to the much more famous, nuclear hexagrams. Each hexagram contains a thought and a nuclear hexagram. The cast hexagram forms the apex of a triangle or a trigram, while the thought and nuclear hexagrams are placed at the corners of the triangles base. By combining these two types of hexagrams we can see how specific hexagrams are related, and how there are conduits and wormholes that link the I Ching's most important hexagrams, as is explained in my paper. This model is crucial in explaining most of the questions hinted at by Wilhelm in his classic translation of the I Ching. When Hexagrams change, the two trigrams interlock and form the geometric hexagram commonly known in the west as the Star of David. The changing of hexagrams is like the blooming of the Indian Lotus. Thought Trigrams are determined by superimposing the Sequence of Later Heaven(flesh/senses) onto the Sequence of Earlier Heaven(spirit/thought).Whichever trigram appears underneath the trigram from the Later Heaven Sequence is the thought trigram. [Image]Here is an image of the Sequence of Later Heaven Here is an image of the Sequence of Earlier Heaven [Image] Here is a diagram called "The Unification of the Yellow River Diagram, the Lo Writing, and the Primal and Temporal Eight Trigrams" on the perimeter we can see the relations of the thought trigrams(ex.Earth changes to Wind, Heaven to Mountain, etc.).[Image] The thought trigrams are divided into two primary categories, the Family of Heaven(Father) and the Family of Earth(Mother) The family of Heaven changes in the sequence: 1. Heaven 2. Mountain 3. Thunder 4. FIRE 5. Heaven Father to Third Son to First Son to MIDDLE DAUGHTER to Father. The family of Earth Changes in the sequence: 1. Earth 2. Wind 3. Lake 4. WATER 5. Earth Mother to First Daughter to Third Daugther to MIDDLE SON to Mother. example 1. 14 has a thought hexagram of 33, Fire over Heaven changes to Heaven over Mountain . example 2. 5 has a thought hexagram of 15, Water over Heaven changes to Earth over Mountain. example 3. 50 has a thought hexagram of 10(nuclear of 43) 4 has a thought hexagram of16(nuclear of 24)[Image] The Relations of Androgyny concern the role that the Middle Son and the Middle Daughter play as the ambassadors of Heaven and Earth. As you can see they are the only opposite sex siblings in their respective thought families, and are therefore of mixed identity. The marriage of Heaven and Earth is implied, as their marriage must preceed the birth of the six children and hence the 64 hexagrams; a more elaborate explanation of their androgyny would take too long to explain here and can be found in my papers section on the 1st,2nd,11th, and 12th hexagrams. The Relations of Marriage are shown in the I Ching by Richard Wilhelm. There are four Marriage hexagrams: the 31st, 32nd, 53rd, and 54th. 31 and 32 are where Lake and Thunder marry Mountain and Wind. Lake and Thunder rule, or on top of Mountain and Wind. Lake and Thunder are related as the First Son and the Third Daughter, the extremes among the Children. The First Son Marries the First Daughter and the Third Daughter marries the Third Son. The relevance of the 53rd and 54th hexagrams would again be too much to deal with here, but is further explored in my papers section on the 17th, 18th, 53rd and 54th hexagrams. Note: Upon further reflection id like to clarify and contexualize my definition of androgyny, perhaps the word equality might help. Chinese philosophy and religion are based on the premise of the union of opposites, if we view the relations of marriage as the relations of the inequality found in the tradtional courtship/family structure,we can clearly see this dichotomy. In the 31st hexagram Wilhelm says that the female (Tui) rules the male because this is the relation of courtship, while in the 32nd hexagram male(Chen) rules female(Sun) because this is the relation of marriage itself. This inequality is balanced by the relations of androgyny where Heaven and Earth trade roles as do Water and Fire- again see the previously referenced sections in my paper. The Relations Of Androgyny Heaven/Light/Father;[Image] The Father represents the wonder of Heaven as is suggested in this image of the Orion Nebula.Within the constellation of Orion is Orions Belt, the Heavenly inspiration for the Great Pyramids of Giza, dedicated to Osiris, the Egyptian god of the dead. In the I ching, the Father is the first male, the Third Daughter(Lake) is the last female, in this way chi travels from the Relations of Androgyny to the Relations of Marriage(see section on 50th hexagram in my paper). Earth/Darkness/Mother; [Image]The Trigram Kun represents the Earth and the dark creativity of the womb. This picture of an Earthrise shows both of these concepts. The Mother is the First Female and Chen is her First Child, in this way chi travels from the Relations of Androgyny to the Relations of Marriage(see section on 4th hexagram in my paper). Moon/Water/Middle Son ; [Image] The Moon represents Light in Darkness and is therefore the only male in the thought family of Earth. The moon represents Water and Danger so it influences the tides and the menses. [153k] [Image] Sun/Fire/Middle Daughter; This picture of the sun, the trigram Li, shows her dual nature as the only female in her thought family- Dark fire burns in the Heavens. [168k] The Relations Of Marriage [Image] Thunder/ The First Son/Chen; This Hurricane implies the power of the Storm. Thunder represents the fear of God. The first son is related to the last daughter(Tui, the Lake). As the first born Oedipal male he is also related to the mother(Kun, the Earth) Chen represents the eye of the hurricane and the Pole Star- the child around which the entire family revolves( See section on18th, 37th and 38th hexagrams in my paper and on the 18th hexagram in Wilhelm) [Image] Wind/ The First Daughter/Sun; Wind is the power of Gradual Penetration( R.L. Wing). We can see her effect in this picture as the forces of erosion have levelled these once towering mountains on the north Michigan shore of Lake Superior. The First Daughter also represents wood. [Image] Lake/ The Third Daughter/Tui; Climb this 450 ft. sand dune at the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and acquire the power of the Lake. The Lake represents Joy and Indulgence. This indulgence is tempered by her fear of God, her relationship as the last sibling/family member, with Thunder and Heaven. Tui is the Elektra female. [Image]Mountain/The Third Son/Ken; Millions of years ago Africa and North America came together to form parts of the Appalachian mountains; a geomantic Mecca for the New World African. The Mountain is the realm of the bear and of the Holy Sage- "By the rivers of Babylon I and I sat down, and there I wept tears from my eyes when I remember Mt Zion-i...." Prince Far -i. People of the Diaspora-the Mountain is stubborn and self-reliant, and as others have risen from degradation- you can rise also. Man redeem thyself! The Mountain weds the Third daughter,Tui.
