The USR sportster was released with a broken BIOS. If you bought one very recently, you might be fine, as USR released a free bug-fixed BIOS for the modem. I purchased my USR a long while back, and had the old BIOS with no V.34. I then upgraded to the 11/30/94 BIOS with V.34, to find it was broken, so I was given a free upgrade to the 4/18/95 BIOS (via their BBS). Now, the modem works VERY well and I almost always get excellent 28.8k connects. I also use my modem with uugetty to answer the phone (how I'm connected right now). This is a very good modem if you have the new BIOS. To check it, go into terminal mode and query ATI7. > I have a friend who uses one, and the only thing that he > has noticed is that it makes some pretty weird noises > when connecting at 28.8, but not when connecting at 14.4. > > Any comments from owners of a 28.8 sportster would be > appreciated... > > Steven Coleman > scoleman@comp.uark.edu > > -B.
