Ninevehthe capital of the ancient empire of Assyria, situated on the east bank of the Tigris River, opposite modern Mosul, Iraq. Nineveh contained magnificent palaces and sculpture which have been unearthed in archaeological excavations. The city is thought to have been established circa 2300 B.C. It became the capital in the 700S B.C. and was destroyed in 606 B.C. |
