dventure is my guidon, declared L. Ron Hubbard long ago, and proceeded to etch that phrase across many a dim land, distant sea and limitless sky. He further etched it across that dimmest realm of all, that terra incognita within us, and so came to embody all we imagine when hearing the words, Men had to be big or fall before the unknown. He is still remembered in those far-flung lands: a model of his vessel on display in a Portuguese maritime museum, his photographs hanging on Caribbean walls, the anniversary of his landing in a cornfield at Gratis, Ohio is celebrated on 13 September as L. Ron Hubbard Day. Then, too, of course, he is still remembered along East Seventieth Street where, as it is said, L. Ron Hubbard embodied the adventurous and intrepid spirit of the Explorers Club...
But lest we miss the greater lesson from these pages, let us close with what Ron himself would have us bear in mind. Yes, there is much to be said for the lure of strange horizons and faraway lands, but let us also not forget, Adventure, I well know, is in the heart, not in the view.
