The Dianetics Letters: An Introduction

[Picture]      “It all began,” explained L. Ron Hubbard, “when I first released twelve years of independent research into the field of the mind.” What followed is, of course, all we now know as the revelation of Dianetics, and all that subject represents as a global force for the betterment of man. But if the general history of that movement has been told – how L. Ron Hubbard came to unleash Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, how that book took America by storm through the summer of 1950, and subsequently became the most popular self-help text in publishing history – then here is the history from the eye of that storm. That is, here are the correspondence of L. Ron Hubbard from the advent of a discovery that forever changed our conception of who we are and of what we are capable of as human beings.

The letters herein span six crucial years between the development of Dianetics as a workable method for self-discovery to the utilization of that method across three continents. Although not absolutely necessary for an appreciation of what we present in the pages to follow, let us supply a few words on the subject proper.1 In the first place, let us describe Dianetics as an actual technology of the mind, a method of plumbing that, “vast and hitherto unknown realm half an inch back of our foreheads.” In the second place, let us understand Dianetics is a wholly precise practice, and in no way similar to the aimless introspection of Gestalten schools or the haphazard rambling of the psychoanalyst. On the contrary, Dianetics auditing is a most exact “tracing of experience” to relieve the source of all psychosomatic ills and aberrant behavior. Or as Ron himself defines it: “Dianetics is the route from aberrated (or aberrated and ill) human to a well, happy, high-IQ human being.” Finally, let us understand that Dianetics works, and the miracles referenced through the pages of these letters are both real and routine as in: “A little girl bedridden for twelve years...is now walking after only five hours of auditing.”
