TECHNICAL NOTE 7: USE OF M-14 RIFLE MAGAZINES IN AR-10B
RIFLES
1. The AR-10B magazine is based on the proven M-14 Rifle magazine. This
magazine is of 10 round capacity in conformance with the 1994 Crime Bill. If more capacity
is needed, the AR-10B will accept a modified 20 round M-14 magazine.
2. Modification of the magazine requires machining the body of the
magazine, replacement of the follower, and a slight change in the follower spring. This
modification allows the magazine to function in both the M-14 rifle and the AR-10B,
although it will not actuate the bolt catch in the M-14. Modification removes the top half
of the magazines latch plate, thus weakening its attachment to the magazine box. The plate
may break off later, allowing the magazine to function only in an AR-10B. Depending on
magazine length, it is often best to load only 19 rounds in the magazine.
3. ArmaLite will modify suitable a customer's 20 round G.I. or Chinese
M-14 magazine to AR-10B configuration for $30.00. Commercial magazines are not acceptable.
A $10.00 charge is added to deprocess magazines internally or externally coated with
grease.
4. ArmaLite will accept two usable G.I. or Chinese steel magazines in
trade for a modified magazine. New 10 round magazines are available for $30 each. Modified
20 shot magazines are sold, when available.
5. Magazine conversion kits are available to allow customers to convert
their own M14/M1A magazines to AR-10B magazines, and yet allow rapid re-conversion.

6. Modified 20 round M-14 magazines, will not work in 1960 era AR-10 or AR-10A rifles, or
in the Knight's Manufacturing SR-25 rifle. Magazines for those rifles will not work in the
AR-10B series rifles.
7. 20 shot "post-ban" magazines are available to law
government and export purchasers
