Starting materials: 10 litres ice cold H2O 2500 grams KCl 2850 grams NaNO3 Distilled H2O and anhydrous KCl/NaNO3 are recommended. Heat up the H2O and stir in the KCl and NaNO3. Metathesis reaction: 2500g KCl + 2850g NaNO3 <--> 3390g KNO3 + 1960g NaCl Solution concentration(grams per 100ml H2O): KCl-25.00 KNO3-33.90 NaCl-19.60 NaNO3-28.5 Chill solution to 0C. 2060g KNO3 will crystallize out using 1519g KCl and 1732g NaNO3 in the conversion. Filter out KNO3 and set aside. Solution concentration(grams per 100ml H2O): KCl-9.81 KNO3-13.30 NaCl-19.60 NaNO3-11.18 Boil solution down to 40% of its original volume. Filter and discard the NaCl that precipitates. Add to solution 10% of its volume of H2O and stir. Chill to 0C. Filter out KNO3 and set aside. Repeat this cycle to get remaining KNO3.
